REALM TAKES ON THE VEHICLE TRACKING INDUSTRY

Over the past few months, Realm Digital has been working on a very exciting new project and has developed an advanced service that integrates with a tracking device for a fleet solutions company.

The device can track vehicles, determine locations, assist in managing the fleet and ascertain when a vehicle will be available again for rental. Integration with this device will ensure workflow efficiencies by assisting the company to better understand how vehicles are being used. The device will also report damaged vehicles and could link to insurance companies, notifying them of driver behaviour.

Realm used a combination of coding languages to build the solution, namely Angular and TypeScript. Angular made it easy to build the front-end application that could then be used on mobile, desktop and web. Angular is written in TypeScript with the biggest selling point of TypeScript being that it provides advanced autocompletion, navigation, and refactoring. Typescript ultimately compiles into Javascript.

Definition of Angular:

“Angular is a platform that makes it easy to build applications with the web. Angular combines declarative templates, dependency injection, end to end tooling, and integrated best practices to solve development challenges. Angular empowers developers to build applications that live on the web, mobile, or the desktop” source

During the project Realm were faced with minor challenges, one of which was understanding the data received from the device. After thorough research, we found a suitable framework to understand the data files. Being able to view the map and reports in real-time was quite fascinating.

The next step will be to complete a fully fledged system which the fleet solutions company can use to track and manage entire fleets of vehicles.

Realm is aiming to launch this by early 2018. The future plans are not only limited to vehicle fleets but for any other types of vehicles such as boats and planes or devices such as laptops, cellphones etc.
